Voyager 1 was equipped with 11 scientific instruments designed to conduct high-resolution imaging, ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy, magnetic field mapping, and plasma science.
Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS)
Utilized two television-type cameras (narrow-angle and wide-angle) with select filters to capture high-resolution planetary photography.
Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (IRIS)
Measured temperatures, atmospheric compositions, and thermal properties of planets and moons.
Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS)
Detected atmospheric gases and measured light emission in the far-ultraviolet spectrum.
Triaxial Fluxgate Magnetometer (MAG)
Mapped planetary magnetic fields, magnetospheres, and tracked solar wind fluctuations.
Plasma Detector (PLS)
Analyzed plasma characteristics, ionized gas temperatures, and particle speeds.
Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP)
Measured the energy spectra and angular distributions of electrons and ions.
Cosmic Ray System (CRS)
Studied high-energy cosmic rays, chemical compositions, and interstellar electrons.
Plasma Wave Subsystem (PWS)
Measured thermal electron density profiles near Jupiter and Saturn.
